“THE WORLD’S SWEETHEART”
MARY PICKFORD NEW TALKIE “COQUETTE” IS GREAT SUCCESS Mary Pickford is abandoning silent pictures and in future will make “talkies” only. Her latest picture, “Conquest,” in which Mary speaks for the first time, has created a deep impression in America. It has been a tremendous success everywhere, and is an overwhelming triumph for a star who never before, in all her series of popular victories, has displayed so great an emotional power. The silent sweetheart of America has become the speaking sweetheart in the talkies. Mary’s legion of admirers will see her and heax a different individual. The charm that has built up the amazing Pickford legend remains. Miss Pickford bridges the Pollyanna era and grows up in her first talking picture by virtue of a combination of the pert sophistication of this modern day with the innate suplicity which, among other characteristics, has preserved for her an almost unique place in the stellar ranks of the industry. Miss Pickford’s screen career stands without parallel in every way for longevity, for stardom and for cleanliness. Mary Pickford’s voice has been a great surprise and is described by reviewers as the golden voice of the screen. MUNICIPAL BAND AT ZOO The Municipal Band will give its usual al fresco performance at the Zoological Park tomorrow (Sunday) afternoon, at 2.45 o’clock. An interesting programme will include the overture, “Poet and Peasant”; selections from “The Gondoliers” and “The Maid of the Mountains”; suite, “Italiana”; patrol, “The Wee Macgregor”; cornet duet, “The Tyrolean Lovers”; piccolo solo, “The Wren”; and other tuneful numbers.
