FALSE ALARM OF FIRE

STAMPEDE IN ELECTION MEETING MANY PEOPLE INJURED (United Service) LONDON, Thursday. A sudden cry of fire caused a sensation when 12,000 people were listening to an address given by the Liberal candidate for Tiverton, Devonshire, in a cinema. The building was so packed that there was barely an inch unoccupied. Men and women rushed for the exits when the cry was raised, many being crushed or bruised. Numerous women fainted and the screams of others were heard over a wide area. Panic-stricken people began to leap out of the windows of the hall into adjacent gardens and streets. They collapsed when they reached the ground. Mr. Foot and others on the platform shouted appeals for order. They alleged that the false alarm had been raised by their opponents.
