FATAL MOTOR RACE
500-MILE SPEED TEST IN AMERICA RAY KEECH THE WINNER (Australian and 2s.Z. Press Association) (United Service) 9.55 a.m. INDIANAPOLIS, Thursday. Ray Keecli, of Philadelphia, aged 28, won the 500-mile motor race and £20,000 at the speedway on Thursday, before 160,000 people. His time was 5 hours 7 minutes 25 seconds. Louis Meyer, Los Angeles, was second. There were 33 starters. Thirteen finished. William Spence, of Los Angeles, was killed when his car overturned. Keecli, who a year ago was comparatively little known, won in a blazing sun. He covered the distance at an average speed of 97.555 miles an hour, driving a masterful, steady race, while many others lost their heads near the beginning. Lew Mayer, who won last year in the time of 99.482 miles an hour, finished second. Spence, who was killed, was a prominent racer. He crashed, against a wall, and liis skull was cruslied. Several other hair-raising accidents occurred, with injuries, but there were no other deaths.
