NEW CIVIC THEATRE

CITY INSPECTOR SEEKS DETAILED PLANS referred to committee In view of the fact that certain structural details of the new Civic Theatre have been altered the chief building inspector of Auckland asked the City Council last evening whether the job should be stopped pending the supplying of further details of steel girder design. •‘A month ago, the ordinary plans c f this theatre, were submitted to the Town Planning Committee for their approval of the facade and other matters which concern that committee. and a start was then made with a portion of the foundations and the removal of the earthwork, which had been in progress for some time,” the inspector reported. "At the time referred to, Mr. Charles Bohringpr, tho architect, had been in tuckland for a week and the plans were fully discussed with the city engineer, chief building inspector, and the plumbing inspector, with tho object of having t.ie work carried out in accordance with the by-laws, and to avoid any trouble at a later date when the work was in progress. After all the questions affected were cleared up, the architect left for Sydney, and promised that wo should bo supplied with the full plans and details within one month from that date, and in view of this, the work was allowed to proceed. "Until the whole of the superstructure details are supplied for* checking the safety of tho superstructure, no building permit has been issued, and it would seem that unless some drastic steps are taken, these necessary details are not likely to come to hand for some time yet. For this reason, I am placing tile matter before tho council for their decision on the subject as to whether or not the job should be stopped.” , It was decided that the TTorks Committee report with a view to setting the matter settled.
