TAUMARUNUI NEWS
A party of three hundred South Island farmers, journeying by special train to Hamilton and the Winter Show there, as part of a fifteen-day tour of the North Island, made a brief stay at Taumarunui. The trip has been arranged by the Railways Department in conjunction with the Waikato Winter Show Association, and its primary object is the meeting of northern farmers and the interchange of ideas and experiences. • • * The first race under the auspices of the newly-formed Taumarunui Cycle Club attracted a good deal of interest. The contest was over a distance of seven miles, and resulted: S. Fraser, 25seo handicap. 1: J. Carmody, 25sec, 2; O. Kannerwiske, 30sec, 3. The arrangements for the race were made by a sub-committee consisting of Messrs. J. Miles, R. J. Lawrence and P. Reardon, the latter of whom declared the handicaps. « * * Excellent weather prevailed for the shoot arranged by the Taumarunui Rod and Gun Club, which resulted:—Handicap sweepstake of five birds: J. Brown, 12yds, possible. 1; J. Worsley, E. Lightfoot, A. Bellamy and J. Amundsen tied lor second with four breaks. Sevenbird handicap sweepstake: G. Bretherton. 17yds, J. Amundsen, 17yds. A. Bellamy. 15yds, and E. Lightfoot, 15yds, tied with six breaks. Ten-bird handicap sweepstake: A. Bellamy, 16yds, nine breaks. 1; G. Bretherton, J. Amundsen and K. Kelland tied with eight breaks for second. Seven-bird gimcrack: R. Harris, six breaks, 1; J. Amundsen, five breaks, 2. * * * A special meeting of the Taumarunui Borough Council considered the estimates for the current year, as submitted by a special committee consisting of the Mayor, Mr. C. A. Boles, and Crs. »W. Davis, A. T. Driffil and S. R. Dryland. The council passed the estimates as given, and carried a unanimous resolution of appreciation to the Mayor on the businesslike manner in which the various matters had been dealt with. The figures will allow the general rate to remain the same as last year. Id. Special rates are reduced from 5 l-8d to sd; special drainage from 3-Sd to ’id: hospital increased from 4-5 d to Id; river protection reduced from Id to id.
