Championship Soccer

FIRST ROUND FINISHES

Gan Trams be Beaten ?

THE final games of the first round of the senioi championship will be played tomorrow. Trams are undefeated, while Ponies and Young Men have lost one game each. The three leading clubs will appear at Blandford Park, Trams v. Y.M. being the principal game, and Ponies meet Celtic for the first tme in the preliminary match. Shore plays Onehunga on the West Coast and Thistle journeys to Devonport to play Belmont.

The programme at Blandford Park tomorrow is a very attractive one, and keen interest is being taken in the Trams - Y.M.C.A- clash, as a loss to the transporters would even things up at the end of the round, and leave the struggle for championship honours very open for starting the second and final lap. The Young Men have a good all-round team, in which youth and dash is dominant, with a judicious leavening of experienced players. Trams were sorely pressed at times against Shore last week, and could only collect the points by a bare goal. But the champions always give their best displays at Blandford Park, and should finish the first round without a loss. Celtic can put up a hard battle, and Ponies cannot afford to hold their opponents too cheaply, but should retain the second rung of the ladder. Shore is taking a weakened team to Onehunga, and the home eleven should win. but the Thistle-Belmont affair at Devonport will be a battle for avoiding the bottom rung, and history may repeat itself, as Belmont is a two-goal better team at Devonport. FLOODLIGHT SOCCER

PONIES BEAT DIOMEDE There was a good attendance at Blandford Park last evening to witness the floodlight game between Ponsonby and the Diomede. Both teams called liberally on their reserve forces, and in a lively finish the Ponies were lucky to secure victory by the odd goal in five. The first spell was fairly quiet, the sailors having the advantage of territorial play, and Gill put them one up before the interval. In the second half. Innes equalised with a splendid drive from 23 yards out, and both sides warmed up. Diomede missed a number of scoring chances by poor shooting, until Dunford registered a hit with a swift cross shot. Rogers and Forman scored for Ponies from good openings made by Wilson, and the matelots were defeated by three goals to two.
