G.N. Hurdles
BRILLIANT FIELD TOMORROW First of Big Winter Events ONCE again the Great Northern meeting, probably the most popular of the four fixtures staged by the Auckland Racing Club, is at hand, for tomorrow at Ellerslie will see the opening of the three-days’ gathering at headquarters, the fixture being continued on Monday (King’s Birthday) and Wednesday. The big attraction tomorrow is the Great Northern Hurdles, with the picturesque Great Northern Steeplechase set down as the star turn on Monday. “Early Bird’s” review of tomorrow’s prospects appear below. The course at present is in good order, if a bit soft, U JERVOIS HANDICAP IS (FIRST DIVISION) * Of £325; 1 mile Maori Boy 50 0 pt' those in the first heat recent Catonian . Those are the ten possibles, but there are others capable of turning the trick. Perhaps the machine favouritism will lie between: — , CYBELE and STAR COMET O C GREAT NORTHERN HURDLES Of £1,750; 2J miles Red Fuchsia. 10 18 . That leaves in Red Fuchsia, Wiltshire, Kawini and Mister Gamp, and it is hard to go further than this. Wiltshire is a decided possibility, while Mister Gamp may be the actual first fancy tomorrow. However, he is inclined to chance his fences, good jumper that he is, and for that reason one may be pardoned for declaring in favour of two great jumpers to beat him perhaps, such as Red Fuchsia and Kawini. However, they may be preferred in this order: — RED FUCHSIA, KAWINI, MISTER GAMP O Cft CORNWALL HANDICAP Of £1,000; M miles Corinax ... 9 12 As in the preceding race, it is not be Choucas . 8 1 Seatovn ... 9 6 proposed to deal with the big flat The Dover. . 8 1 Boulton . . 9 4 event Other than briefly to sum- ctaeen Ar'ch .' 8 0 The Hawk . 9 3 manse the list of probables, -and Eager Rose . 8 0 Bisox .... 9 3 even then the element of surprise Paddon . . » 0 Hyde Park. . Luck in the running, particularly in the early stages when the field swings round the sharp turn upon leaving the straight, will play a big part, but with a run at all it is going to take a real good one to head off: two such solid customers as: BISOX and CORINAX a ‘lfl HUNT CLUB HURDLES Of £400; 2 miles This is really a poor field, and Taumai ... 9 0 Pi I.- imni 10 11 Opnpi*p i Odin ..’.' .* 912 judging from the quality engaged Maniapoto 9 0 Te Horea ..91 the race almost looks out of place Night Comet 9 0 Terrapeen ..91 on n programme of the Bllerslie Master Soami ... 9 0 Clements . 9 0 Marita 9 0 sfunclaid. Vallar would be greatly fancied on a reasonably dry track, and if it is bad going the stable may elect to pin its faith to Dave, who is in good order. Hoariri is one of our best mudlarks, and his recent racing in Australia should enirble him to be well seasoned. Kingfield has failed of late to show that dash that marked his earlier autumn efforts. Black Duke is a distinct possibility if he gets away from the barrier all right; he was slow each day at "Wanganui, but for which he might have won there. Then there was his great gallop yesterday. Valkon may not be quite equal to this, and Awarere would prefer the top of the ground. Oration will be a surprise packet if he bobs up, but x Gold Money will have a host of admirers. She is not yet absolutely reliable at the barrier, and is inclined to loaf over the early part. She has only to be placed handy at the home turn to give the opposition something to do. Lady’s Boy. It is a very hard race, but with a run two that should go strongly in the market are: GOLD MONEY and KEDDAR
