NEW NUMBERS
City Rush For Motor Registration CROWDS BESET OFFICE The busiest office in the city | today is at the Wellesley Post Office, where Auckland’s motor vehicles are being registered. Tomorrow every motorist must have a blue and white number-plate on his car in place of the maroon and white that has served the purpose for 12 months. All cars have to be re-registered by June 1, and this year, so far as Auckland is concerned, many motorists have postponed tne fulfilment of this statutory duty until the last day. The result was that a steady, eageY stream of people beset the clerical staff at the Motor Registration office today. Men and women jostled together, and s le people, a-little less familiar with the pen than others, bore worried looks as they pondered over the complicated forms with which they were confronted. In the little democracy of that office, the fur-coated girl had to take her chance equally with the aproned lorry-driver. The clerical staff, specially augmented. was hustled throughout the day. Improvised counters were erected, and over them hundreds of pound notes were passed. Each per- ! son paid £2 registration, £1 for | third-party insurance, and 2s 6d for the shining new plate.. There are approximately 22,000 registered vehicles, and up till last evening only about 14,000 had been re-registered. That’s why a Wellesley j Street office staff is so harried today.
