LARGE FOSSIL BED

DISCOVERY NEAR ONEROA EXPERTS INVESTIGATING A fossil-bed containing 76 different species of mollusca, of which 70 are extinct, and 46 new to science, has been i n vest i gated on the foreshore near Oneroa, Waiheke Island. Details of the new specimens are being prepared. \fEMBERS of the Auckland Institute A were shown a fossil oyster-shell six inches across and a cockle-shell nearly as large, last evening, by Mr. A. W. B. Powell, conchologist to the Auckland Museum. Mr. Powell has been investigating the bed in cooperation with Professor J. A. Bartram, of Auckland University College. He said that the existence of the bed had been reported in 1927 by Mr. E. W. Tetley, a biology student at the University College.
