XUGBY UNION’S DECISION MORE SHIELD CHALLENGES Press Association WELLINGTON, Wednesday. A meeting or the Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union was held this evening. Air. S. S. Smythe (Denniston). M. j Gough (Westport), W. J. CLougblin j (Temuka). S. W. Payne (Christchurch), j A. R. Priest (Pigeon Bay), C. S. Crotty (Le Bons Bay), J. C. Taylor (Auck- ! land). J. A. Te Puni (Petone), C. D. J. ! Palmer (Auckland). The Nelson L’nion wrote asking | whether outside evidence by spectators could be taken in regard to any breach committed or whether .the referee .and player concerned only could .state .the .acts of the case. Tfle rule stated that the referee’s word was final. If that was so the accused player had no chance of establishing his innocence. Mr. Dean sad it would be unwise to admit the evidence of spectators, and iu was decided to advise the Nelson Union to this effect. Challenges for the Ranfurly Shield were formally lodged by the Waikato | and Wanganui Unions. ! Mr Dean agreed that it would be a good idea if outside referees .were ap- ‘ pointed to control inter-provincial matches. Other members agreed with this view, and it was decided to recommend the suggestion to affiliated unions, j The Fiji Rugby Union wrote asking , to be supplied with 20 copies of the ! laws of the game as laid down by the International Rugby Board. Mr. J. McLeod, of Taranaki, was apj pointed manager of the New Zealand ! team to tour Australia next month.
