WORK OF DAIRY BOARD DISCUSSION AT CONFERENCE Press Association MASTERTON, Wednesday. An address was given at the interprovincial conference of the Farmers’ Union today by the chairman of the Dairy Board, Mr. W. A. lorns, who stated that it was often said the board cost dairy factories a lot and they were getting nothing for it. He noticed in a report of a meeting of one factory with an output of 3,000 tons a statement that its levy to the Dairy Board was £6OO per annum. That might be so, but it was getting £5,000 back in reduced costs. Mr. lorns quoted figures showing savings made by factories through the board which was fully alive to the importance of the marketing end of the business. He was confident that it was working on right lines. Later the conference discussed a remit from the Martinborough branch that it should support the Dominion president in the proposed amalgamation of the Meat and Dairy Boards. After a debate the proposal was rejected by 22 votes to 19. The occasion gained additional interest from the presence of the Dominion president of the Farmers’ Union, Mr. W. J. Poison, who strongly favours amalgamation of the two boards, and took part in the debate. Mr. lorns said the Meat and Dairy Boards worked together and had benefited by co-operation, but a combined board was impracticable. He did not see how there would be any saving under amalgamation.
