POTATO SHIPMENT
SOUTHERN PRODUCTION WHAT AUCKLAND BUYS Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Tuesday. No change has taken place in the values of produce. Although there was a suggestion of easing in the potato market, Auckland is doing business at fully late local rates with impending consignments. Potatoes leaving by the Wingatui tonight and by the Kaiwarra on Friday have been sold at £5 73 6d. It is considered that the Wingatui’s cargo will not exceed 7,000 sacks, exclusive of 2,000 or 3,000 lifted from Timaru. Farmers are not selling, and it is stated that since deliveries have been impressed to Jll up one or two merchants’ commitments for this month, the test of the market is fairly certain to come next month. Most of the forward business will then nave been dealt with and with farmers sitting tight” the question of the quantity of potatoes about will be more easily judged. WHARF RATES Potatoes arriving in Auckland by the Waipiata were sold at £7 ss, ex wharf, equal to £5 12s Gd here, which shows 5s a ton advance. The business in potatoes has been very heavy and on paper there should be enough going North by this week’s boats to last the northern citv for some weeks. However, a good deal of the business has gone round, and cancellations have been so heavy that little more than a nominal consignment will go forward. It has been wondered that supplies going North this year should be well in urrear of those recorded for last season, which was a big one. Detailed figures of dispatches (sacks) from Lyttelton show:
The onion market has weakened, and from £3 Ids to £i a ton is quoted. The season is getting on. Onions are. not keeping very well.
