TIMBER TRADE DEADLOCK Reed. 11 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. The secretary of the Timber Merchants’ Association, Mr. Corke, stated that in New South Wales, except in Newcastle and Sydney, in South Australia, Tasmania and Western Australia, the 4S-hour week and the Lukin award were being fully observed. Out of a membership of 21,000 5n the Timber Workers’ Union, not more than 6.000 were now on strike against the award. A Melbourne message says that negotiations having failed to settle the strike, the timber merchants decided to reopen the mills and call for labour under the award rates and hours. A mass meeting of 2,000 workers affirmed an intention to hold out foi 44 hours and the Webb award.
