The Care of the Car

Curing Mudguard Rattles Mudguards fitted with side wings have an annoying habit ot ratting, due to the wings coming into vibratory contact with the mudguard stays. This rattle can be stopped by removing the nuts and slipping short lengths of generator tubing over the stays to act as buffers, then replacing the nuts. This tip holds good for any other of the cycle parts of the machine which rattle'. Little rubber washers cut from tubing are more effective than leather in this respect, although, of course, more perishable. Conquering Stubborn Hub-Cap Sometimes it is very difficult to remove the hub-cap, even when a large wrench is used for the purpose. This is usually due to water, which has found its way to the threads of the cap and formed rust. In this case, make use of the jack described here. Procure a long-handled wrench, so as to obtain good leverage, and place the jack under the end of the handle. A few strokes of the jack will start the most stubborn hubcap. This method is equally successful with big trucks, using the jack furnished with the truck. When removing wheel-nuts, you should bear in mind that the nuts usually have right-hand threads on the left side, and left-hand threads on the right side of the • hub. Do Not Keep on Turning It is of little use to turn the engine over and over by the starting handle or by means of the engine starter, in an effort to set it going. If the engine will not start with a few turns, the chances are there is something radically out of order, requiring intelligent attention. With the carburettor giving correct mixture, the ignition system affording a hot and effective spark, and everything apparently all right, it should be as easy to secure an explosion on the second turn as on the sixtieth. So, if the engine will not start with the second or third attempt it is not likely to start after three or four hundred. Consequently it is better to find out the trouble than to turn the engine over indefinitely or to run the battery down. DIRT-TRACK RACING ENGLAND’S NEW SEASON Dirt track racing commenced again in England last month, and the first meeting was held at the W 7 est Ham Stadium. T-wenty-five thousand spectators were present, and the promoters introduced some new Ideas. For instance, the pushers off now wore different colours —each man the colour of the rider he is starting. Also, the gate leading from the paddock to the track is now on raised ground, giving an effect of each rider appearing over the brow of a hill.

The racing was excellent, and Roger Frogley (Douglas) just managed to beat Sprouts Elders, who in turn just beat Billy Lamont, the well-known Australian rider.
