THE THRIFTY CHINESE
Sir, — According to figures compiled by the “Yokohama Specie Bank," the Chinese living out of China send home every year an average of 27 dollars a heal. In 1925, 1,170,000 Chinese living in the Straits Settlements sent home 19,026.000. dollars, or 16 dollars a head--250,000 Chinese from the Philippine Islands, 13,228,000 dollars, or 53 dollars a head; 800,000 from the Dutch West Indies. 10.840,000 dollars, or 13 dollars a head. There are 1,800,000 Chinese in Siam--360,000 in French Indo-Cliina- 300 000 in Burma, etc. . . . Altogether six to seven millions living away from their own country. It is estimated that 160,000.000 dollars thus goes into China yearly, which helps to cover the adverse balance of trade. At Evanston (Illinois). the magistrate reduced the amount of remittances of a Chinaman employed in a laundry, Joe Dong Dong, by fining him 10 dollars for starching clothes according to the old Chinese custom known as the “month svsteth ” The accused declared that he was acting under instructions from the manager of the laundry, with the result that The latter was fined 60 dollars in iiis turn So muc-h more, money kept from the Nationalists!
