NORTH SHORE’S NARROW WIN

North Shore had a difficult game against Epiphany on Saturday afternoon, only winning by one goal to nil.’ Epiphany played an excellent tensive game, effectively checking the Shore forwards whenever they reached the circle. Both sides played bulloeking, energetic games, plenty of willingness being displayed—in fact, so much that the referees had to caution the teams. For the greater part of the game Snore kept up a continual attack, its value being somewhat lessened by the fact that the front line continued to adopt an arrowhead formation instead of keeping level and by the fact that there was insufficient support from the half-backs, the second line keeping too far in the rear to have time to beat the Epiphany men to the ball when it was driven through the front line.

Occasionally Epiphany broke out and then the forwards showed pretty passing work. They were, however, never quite fast enough on their feet to

keep the advantage, and were invariably driven back into the circle. The Epiphany backs played a splendid game. Although for over twothirds of the game the Shore men were in the Epiphany twenty-five, yet they only scored once-—several times they were on the very verge of getting the ball into the net, but each time the Epiphany backs saved successfully. On the whole the game was not very exciting. The first half was decidedly dull and. even in the second, when the play speeded up considerably, there was not much spectacular work. But there was much sound hockey played on both sides, and no very grievous errors, so that the game was interesting to watch.
