STOLE A PRAYER-BOOK

PILFERING FROM BOOKSELLERS’ SHOPS MAN’S STRANGE BEHAVIOUR A map of New Zealand, three postcards and a prayer book were the articles stolen by Wiliiam Coates from Auckland booksellers during the last 10 days. OATES, a liftman, aged 33, was charged at the Police Court this morning with stealing a map and postcards valued at 3s 9d from Wildman and Arey on May 24 and a prayer book valued at 9s 6d from the Auckland Sunday School Union on May 17. Mr. Manning entered a plea of guilty for Coates. “There is not much to be said for this young man,” he remarked. Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M.: Young man—he is 33. Mr. Manning: He is perhaps old in years but not in mentality. This is his first appearance before the court and I would suggest that he be admitted to probation. Sub-Inspector McCarthy agreed that the man was in need of supervision. “He is weak mentally,” he added. “Lately Coates has been loitering about the streets grimacing at himself in mirrors.” Coates was admitted to probation for 12 months. Counsel assured the magistrate that the Rev. Jasper Calder would also keep an eye on the man. An appeal for suppression of the name was not granted.
