HORTON SMITH WINS
GOLF CHAMPIONSHIP OF FRANCE BOOMER’S GREAT ROUND (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) (United ServiceJ Reed. 1 a.m. PARIS, Wednesday. At St. Cloud, Horton. Smith (United States), who was 21 years ot age today, won the French golf championship with 273. Boomer was 278, Cotton (Britain) 283, Sarazen (United States) 285. Hagen (United States) 293. During the third round Boomer was 61, the lowest score for the course. The performance of Horton Smith yesterday in twice breaking the course record with brilliant rounds of 66 was the feature of the tournament. ' One critic says his play was the most impressive he has seen here for years. He agrees with Arnaud Massy’s judgment that in a few years Horton Smith will beat the world. Hagen spoilt his chances yesterday at the fourth hole by duffing a simple chip shot from a shallow bunker near the green. He seemed to lose his temper, and for the first time in Europe hit three times hurriedly before extracting the ball, holing out the most costly eight in. his career. He did an unbelievable thing in taking six strokes from 25yds from the pin. The previous record for the course was claimed by Boomer, who is the club professional, with a score of 62.
