Insult to Brave Dead

STUDENTS MAKE AMENDS Sydney Cenotaph Wreathed (United, P.A.—By Telegraph — Copyright) Received 9.25 a.m. SYDNEY. Today. WEARING academic gowns, 26 representatives of the Sydney University Undergraduates’ Association tiled solemnly past the Cenotaph ancl placed on it a large wreath with a card bearing the words: “From the undergraduates of Sydney University, as an apology for the insult to our glorious dead.”

In addition to the procession being banned, the smoke concert and the ball have also been cancelled. Lectures will recommence forthwith. The university authorities express deep regret at the unseemly conduct of a small proportion of the undergraduates, two of whom are to be prosecuted by the police. The vice-chancellor declares that their behaviour has broken his heart, as the undergraduates had previously given an assurance that there would be no misconduct. The officials of the Returned Sol-

diers’ Association are incensed at the students’ desecration of the Cenotaph. They threatened that if the proposed procession were attempted they would brake it up. They demand that the university authorities shall ascertain the names of the offenders at the Cenotaph and summarily expel them. The Soldiers’ Mothers, Wives and Widows’ Association intends to press the issue of summonses against the offenders. The Soldiers’ League probably will ask for police protection of the Cenotaph day and night owing to the continuous misdeeds committed there.
