STRIKE WEAKENING
MEN DRIFTING BACK TO WORK EARLY COLLAPSE EXPECTED Reed. 11 a.m. SYDNEY, Today. There are indications that the timber strike is about to collapse at any time. During the last few days about 200 men have returned to work, while the timber merchants state that applications for re-employment have been, received from many skilled men. Yesterday 150 men resumed work on new buildings in the city, after forcing it to sanction their return, defying the strike committee and Following a meeting of the employers and employees in Melbourne, the prospects of settlement are considered bright. HOUSES BOMBARDED Houses at Waverley, Paddington and Drummoyne were damaged yesterday morning by stones alleged to have been thrown by striking timber workers or their sympathisers, who drove round in a motor-car. The inmates of the various homes had narrow escapes from injury. Packets of fireworks were lighted and thrown through the broken windows. The attacks were not confined to the homes of volunteer timber workers.
