£6,500,000

Minister Has Many Requests THREE DAYS’ HAUL "REQUESTS involving an expendi--L*' ture of £6,500,000, were presented to the Hon. W. B. Taverner, Minister of Railways, during a three days’ tour of Otago Central. This was stated by the Minister yesterday in replying to a welcome given him by the Auckland branch of the United Party, as an example of the multiplicity of requests placed before a Minister on tour. “No Minister of Finance could hope to do one-fiftieth part of what is asked,” he said. The Minister added that as far as his departments were concerned, Auckland requests would get a fair deal. The duplication of the railway between Papatoetoe and Papakura would be done as soon as finances permitted, as he recognised the work was essential to the efficient operation of trains.
