Mister Gamp Gains Support

ZIRCON JUMPS SPLENDIDLY WORK-OUTS AT ELLERSUE An ideal morning at Ellerslie t 0 day enabled trainers to put their teams through some interesting try-outs in view of their engagements at the Great Xorthern meeting, opening on Saturday week. There was a fair amount of galloping on number one grass, and an interested crowd of spectators witnessed some excellent jumpl ing. The turf was in good order. Over the Sticks There was an abundance of hurdl in?--, the battens being erected on the outside of the ccAirse proper. The best effort in this connection was given by the Great Xorthern Hurdles favourite. Mister Gamp, ridden by A. Hobson. Like most of the others lie started off at the fence at the seven-furlong peg. and from there to the last obstacle at the bottom of the straight there were four fences to be negotiated. Mister Gamp fairlv flew the first, took the second in hi*s stride, was just a wee bit uncertain at the third, and then cleaned the last with a minimum of effort. The time from tho first hurdle to last hurdle was 1.22, but as the chestnut hugged the outside rails all round the big top bend the try-out was probably * a couple of seconds better than the watch actually showed. That he in at his best was evident when he was afterwards worked on the grass, sprinting homo the last three in a lively 40. Mister Gamp this morning showed that he is greatly improved in his jumping since he was here 12 months ago. and it would appear as if he has only to stand up to win the big hurdles next week. Bizarro is fast becoming a proficient hurdler. Ridden by F. McGovern, lie had little difficulty in defeating Terrapecn (Butter worth). Adjuster (Wilson) and War Officer <T. Chaplin), tho last-named unshipping his rider at the third fence. The time was slow —1.25 2-5. A Nice Display Harbour View (L. AVatsop) pleased much, better-than Blajo (L. Husband) in a spin over the same four hurdles in 1.22, giving a fine display throughout. Blajo was not disgraced. Lady Spalpeen (J. Sharkey and Golden Wedding (L. Husband), took 1.24 3-5. The latter fenced very slowly, and both ran down the final obstacle. Master Clements (H. Jones) and Te Horea (J. Burgess) gave only a moderate display in slow time. Over the schooling hurdles in the centre Automne (H. Jones) showed plenty of dash, and it is very probable that he will fare well in this department. Over the Hill The ’chasers entertained the crowd with some nice schooling. Vexatious, Sea Comet and Son o’ Mine went over the five fences on the fiat twice, the first-named giving a fine display. Potoanui (J. Sharkey), Clockwork (J. Burgess) and Zircon (E. Garrett) together with. Kauri Paxk (IT. Dulieu)

and Kilburn (A, Hobson), were also schooled. The first three took the water jump, but the other two negotiated the double, Kilburn dropping out after clearing the brush (old water jump) nicely, and then galloping on the grass. The four others we/it on over the hill, all jumping splendidly on the top, and they continued on to the stone wall on the flat again. Zircon finishing just in front of Clockwork, with Potoanui and Kauri Park a few lengths. Away. Zircon and Clockwork went on and cleared the old water jump before their task was completed. Zircon fenced very smoothly throughout and gained a lot of friends. On the Flat The first to make an appearance were Catoma and tho Lucullus-Lady Bunyan filly in W. Gill’s stable, the pair getting comfortably over three furlongs in 39 4-5. Hyde Park and High Pitch gQt through a serviceable gallop over seven furlongs in 1.36 3-5. Kaiwanga and Thursby covered a round in 1.56 2-5, finishing together. The Lover, Corinax and Sleepy Sol were asked to travel a circuit, and j after going slow in the early part ran their last six furlongs in 1.20 3-5, fairly good time. Te Money and Dark Prince were partnered over six furlongs, the last five in 1.10. Taneriri had half a length the best of Hoariri when they recorded 1.21 for six furlongs. Commencing strongly to cover a round, Eager Rose was joined by Theodolite over the last six furlongs, the latter finishing several lengths I clear. Eager Rose was timed to take 1.24 2-5 for the last six. Lady's Boy and Mountain Guide had | little between them at the end of sis furlongs, the last five taking 1.9. For a round Bonny Day and Abbot’s Delight finished together in 1.59 4-5, Karamu taking 2.3 2-5 for a similar distance. Beau Cavalier moved over a round in 1.59 2-5. the last mile in 1.52 3-5/ He is getting through plenty of solid work, but he will hardly be at the top of his : form during the meeting. My Idea was doing much better than j Xeil when this pair strode over half a mile in 51, the last three in 3S 2-5. From almost a stand Palmares and Dave pleased by running five furlongs in 1.7 1-5. Standfast and Modest Boy could have improved upon the 1.21 4-5 they registered for six furlongs. Comical was given a long working gallop, moving freely. Silver Paper The brilliant three-year-old, Silver Paper, is not a track worker at present as far as a racing preparation goes, but he is being kept healthy and well by means of road work and a little steady pacing, with the result that he is building up under this treatment, records the “Southland Times.” Aspiring, half-sister to the Ormond Gold Cup Memorial winner, has grown duringhff spell of the past few months, and AV. Stone is now putting her through an easy course of exercise preparatory t° a spring preparation. The daughter of Some Boy II is growing like ber dam. Silver Peak, in many respects, and it is to be hoped for the sake oi her sporting connections that proves to be quite as good.
