TAKING LIBERTIES

THE Hawke’s Bay handicapper has taken rather a ris’k with Wakefield in the two-mile squaregaiters’ heat at Hastings, making a big allowance on his pacing time. Quite recently Wakefield with the straps on went 4.39 2-5, but in the trotters’ race at Hastings the Petereta gelding, who has raced square-gaited, is on a 4.52 mark. The ex-Epsom-trained mare, Roma Bingen, whose best effort over 16 furlongs was 4.51 2-5, is on the same mark as Wakefield, and is handicapped right up to her limit. It will be interesting to see if the double-gaited horse starts in the trot next month.
