“The Tivoli Theatre will never again be at the service of University undergraduates.” This official statement followed a night of unprecedented hooliganism, during which the vice-chancellor of the university was howled down when he tried to restore order, and the president of the Undergraduates’ Association was pelted with crackers. Others were counted out. Jack Barty, a well-known English comedian, leaped from the stage and punched a student.

Other artists refused to go <&. Some who did left in tears, having been pelted with rotten eggs and all manner of vegetables and fruit. The orchestra suffered the same injustice. A few students were ejected from the theatre. Afterwards a crowd of several hundred students careered madly through the streets, shouting wildly and dislocating traffic. The Cenotaph was desecrated by several leaders of the demonstration, •who threw the wreaths to the ground and broke the flower vases. Two arrests were effected.
