NEW ARRIVAL GAOLED STOLE THREE SUITCASES “A strong able-bodied man, he has done no work since he arrived here in February,” said Chief-Detective Hammond of James Anthony Lynch, who was convicted at the Police Court this morning on four charges of theft. Lynch, alias Jack Harty, a seaman, aged 25, pleaded guilty on three charges of stealing suitcases of a total value of £24 10s in Wellington last month. He also admitted the theft of an overcoat valued at £5, which he had stolen from Arthur Bernard Adams in Auckland. According to the Chief-Detective, Lynch had come to New Zealand on one of the Canadian National Steamship Company’s boats in February. One suitcase had been given to Lynch by a girl who had expected him to take it to a certain address for her. “Instead of that he took it to a dealer,” continued the Cliief-Detective. “The other two cases were stolen from the boarding-house where Lynch was staying in Wellington. He took the coat from a car in Albert Street.” Nothing was known of Lynch’s history prior to his arrival in the Dominion. Sentence of six months’ imprisonment was passed.
