LIQUOR FOR NATIVES
OFFENCE AT TE AWAMUTU (From Our Own Correspondent) TE AWAMUTU. Friday. For procuring liquor for consumption by a native, off licensed premises. Charles Lindsay Woodman was fined £ 5 at the Te Awamutu Court on Friday by Mr. Wyvern Wilson. S.M. William Ross Owen was also charged with a similar offence. Constable Forsyth said that quite a lot of liquor was being supplied to natives. After hearing evidence, the magistrate said it was just possible that defendant Owen did not know what had been going on between Woodman and the Maori, as he arriVed on the scene in the middle of their conversation. He would be given the benefit of the doubt, and the charge against him would be dismissed. The Maori, Willie Toa, was charged with aiding and counselling the commission of an offence. He pleaded guilty and was fined £1 and costs.
