CAMBRIDGE NOTES

The first monthly meeting of the newly-elected borough council was held on Thursday evening, the Mayor, Mr. C. H. Priestley, presiding. There was a lengthy discussion over the action? of the Mayor in putting on a man, a previous council employee, fbr casual work. It was felt that the Mayor’s action savoured of going over the heads of the works committee. It was resolved that the engineer have authority to engage casual labour, and that the employment or dismissal of permanent staff shall be dealt with by the council. The engineer was instructed to prepare plans of the projected sewerage scheme to be submitted to the Loans Board. It was also decided to engage Mr. P. C. Bunyard, of Rotorua, as consulting engineer. The Main Highways Board forwarded authority for the expenditure of £230 Is 4d in connection with the extension of the tar-sealing of the Hamilton road to the borough boundary at the western entrance to the town. The Mayor’s honorarium was fixed at £l5O per annum, as before. It was decided to alter the street electric lamps at several intersections so that they will hang in the centre of the streets.
