DIRECT SHIP SERVICE
BRITISH COLUMBIA TO AUSTRALIA TENDERS TO BE CALLED (Australia7i and N.Z. Press Association) Reed. 9.5 a.m. OTTAWA, Friday. A decision has been made by the Department of Trade and Commerce to call for tenders receivable in June for a direct steamship service between British Columbia and Australia. The service will be monthly each way and limited to cargo boats of about 8,000 tons, which will sail from British Columbia ports wherever cargo of sufficient quantities is being offered. The sailings will start as soon as possible after the contract is awarded. There is no subsidy appropriation for the service yet, but it is understood this will be provided when the supplementary estimates are brought down. Shipping men may tender for contracts of one, three, or five years’ duration. The ships must have a speed of ten knots and capacity of a minimum of 4,000,000 feet of lumber, in adidtion to general cargo. They must ply to either Sydney or Melbourne. Tenders close on June 19.
