ARRESTS ON ULIMAROA
Land Agent Held for Theft TAXI-DRIVER’S TRIP INTERRUPTED SMART arrests by the Auckland police on the Ulimaroa this morning, before the steamer sailed for Sydney, resulted in the appearance later in the Police Court of two men. Alfred Ernest Craddock, land agent, of Christchurch, was remanded by Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., on a theft charge involving nearly £9OO. An affiliation order was sought against the other man, an Auckland taxi-driver.
Craddock has been missed in Christchurch for a week or more and a warrant was issued there for his arrest.
Detective A. Allen arrested Craddock, who is 60 years of age. The charge lodged against him was that, on or about April 9, having received £385 on terms requiring him to account for or pay the sum to Thomas Wallace, he committed theft by omitting to account for or pay the amount. Craddock explained to Mr. Hunt in the Court that he considered that it was simply a question of accounts with Wallace. Chief-Detective A. Hammond. representing the police, pointed out that a considerable sum was involved in the charge. “Because of that,” said Mr. Hammond, "I would ask that bail be fixed at a substantial amount.” Mr. Hunt agreed and fixed bail at £SOO. On the application of Mr. Hammond, Craddock was remanded to appear at Christchurch on May 21. An interesting point revealed in
the charge sheet was that Craddock's effects, when he was arrested, amounted to only £37 103. The accused man said that he knew no one in Auckland with whom to arrange bail. He said further that he could not understand why a warrant for his arrest had been issued as the question concerning Wallace was one of accounts. Mr. Hammond: Craddock had a ticket for Sydney this morning. Pie is to go South tonight. Accused: But 1 don’t know why the warrant has been issued. Constable Christiansen arrested the 25-year-old taxi driver against whom an affiliation order was sought. Tlie complainant's child was born last month. Sub-Inspector McCarthy remarked to the magistrate that it was believed that the young man had been married four months and had his wife with him on the Ulimaroa. When arrested his effects were worth £369 10s. The complainant did not appear, and Mr. Hunt, in remanding the young man until May 24, fixed bail at £IOO.
