MODEL SETTLEMENT

ENGLISH FIRMS PROPOSAL PAPATOETOE’S CLAIMS The decision of Messrs. Cadbury and Frys to establish in New Zealand a branch of their works, and to include therein a model settlement on the same lines as those at Bristol and Bournville in England is exercising the minds of the public bodies at Papatoetoe at present. At last evening’s meeting of the Papatoetoe Town Board, Colonel S. J. E. Closey, president, ancj Mr. W. Nesbitt, secretary, of the Papatoetoe Welfare League, waited on the board to enlist its assistance and sympathy in placing the advantages of Papatoetoe before the experts who will be arriving in New Zealand in a few weeks to choose the most suitable site. Colonel Closey said that a large area of land near a centre of population at a, reasonable price would be required, and that included in the scheme there would be a model dairy. Papatoetoe could supply all these needs, and with cooperation between the public bodies could present a strong case. The Railway Department had been approached, and had promised to lay before the experts the cheap transport facilities available for the factory and settlement, and when the proposed electrification of the line was completed further advantages would be available. He a.sked that the Town Board should forward a schedule of the conveniences available, including full data of the water scheme. Colonel Closey said that he had been assured that the party would visit Papatoetoe before making a final decision. Several of the members supported the proposal, and on the motion of the chairman the clerk was instructed to forward all the details required.
