HEAD OF MARIST ORDER

ENTERTAINED BY CLERGY VERY REV. DR. RIEU WELCOMED The Very Rev. Dr. Rieu, S.M.. arrived in Auckland from Rotorua on Monday. As the superior-general of the Marist Fathers lie is making a world tour. He was accompanied by the Very Rev. Father Moran, assistantgeneral, and the Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy, provincial of the order in New Zealand. They are the guests of Bishop Cleary. Father Gondriger presided at a luncheon given by the Marist Fathers, who entertained their superior at luncheon at the Mount Albert Roman Catholic School yesterday. Other guests of honour were Archbishop Cattaneo, apostolic delegate to Australia and New Zealand, Bishop Cleary, Bishop Liston, and some 35 members of the clergy.

The personal representative of the Pope was welcomed by Father Gondriger, who then proposed the health of the superior-general. This was the first occasion during the 91 years the Marist Fathers had been working in New Zealand that they had been visited by their leader, he said. Bishop Cleary supported the toast on behalf of the clergy; Dean Van Dijk, on behalf of the Mill Hill Fathers. London; Father Duggan, on behalf of the Redemptorist Fathers, and the Rev. Brother Borgia, ex-principal of Sacred Heart College, on behalf of the Marist Brothers. The superior-general expressed thanks on behalf of his order. Old boys of St. Patrick’s College, Wellington, entertained Dr. Rieu. Dr. Kennedy and Father Moran at dinner at the Royal Hotel last evening. The toast of the superior-general was proposed by Mr. W. Fallon. Dr. Rieu replied, saying that one of his most pleasant recollections of his world tour would be the two welcomes from college old boys in Wellington and Auckland. The toast of the college was proposed by Mr. J. L- Conlan and the Very Rev. Dr. Kennedy, a former rector of the college, replied. The R.ev. Dr. Woodbury, S.M., proposed the toast of the old boys, Messrs. J- J. Butler and P. J. McNamara replying. Old boys were present from vvnangarei, the Waikato and the King ( Dr lt Rieu leaves this morning for Whangarei to inspect the Marist parish there, , and will return tomorrow evening, when he will l o© a guest at a reception by Roman Catholics of the Mount Albert parish. He has no engagements on Friday, and wl ‘* i l for the Islands by the Tofua on Saturday, accompanied by the Rev. Father Rausch, of Sydney, the procurator of the Marist missions in the Pacific.
