CINEMA FOR CHILDREN
! PRESBYTERIAN APPROVAL NEED FOR SUITABLE FILMS If suitable films are chosen, picture, screening in children’s cinemas has the approval of the Presbyterian Church. The proposal to establish a children’s cinema was favoured by the Auckland Presbytery yesterday afternoon. At the same time a resolution was made, on the motion of the Rev. W. L. Marsh, that the presbytery cordially welcomed screening of films to children where suitable subjects were chosen. Air. Marsh referred to the report of the Expert Committee of the League of Nations on the effect of films on child welfare. This committee hadunalysed 1150 popular films shown in three different countries, and it found in them 97 murders, 51 cases of adtiltery, 19 seductions, 22 abductions and 45 suicides, while 170 thieves and .15 drunkards were unrolled as the chief heroes and heroines of these films. *T have been horrified with what I have seen in some theatres,” Mr. Marsh went on to say. “The 'talkies’ have ■ great possibilities for good or evil.” The speaker added to his motion a j recommendation for the appointment j of a representative advisory committee | jo assist in choosing programmes. i i
