DEALINGS BY EDUCATION BOARD TRAINING COLLEGE COSTS The immensity of the financial responsibilities of the Auckland Bducation Board was the subject of comment by Mr. A. Burns, chairman of the board, this morning. In 1928, the Auckland board was responsible for the handling of £535,453. As Mr. Burns informed his board, this sum was necessarily greater than the money handled by other education boards in New Zealand. Auckland had had by far the greatest work to attend to. The amount caused Mr. Burns to remark on the apparent extension of the board’s business. In 1928, he said, teachers’ salaries in the Auckland district absorbed £532,988. This was easily the biggest item. Household allowances accounted for £16,804, and £16,205 was spent for the conveyance and the board of children. Advances to school committees took £32,397. Mr. .Burns remarked on the considerable cost of the Auckland Training College, which required an expenditure of about £ 50,000 annually. Of the £49,614 spent last year, £40,612 went for students’ allowances. Manual instructors were paid £17,955, and additions to schools cost £65,636. Salaries paid in the office were £10,733. The generosity of the public was shown in the voluntary contributions, which reached £4,794. This carried a pound for pound stibsidy.
A statement came forward showing- a credit bank balance of £8,204 4s Bd. The Auditor-General certified the correctness of the balance-sheet for 1928, and the account of £122 3s 6d for the audit was received.
