MONEY FOR RADIUM

LARGE FUND RAISED IN INVERCARGILL OTAGO’S REQUEST Press Association DUNEDIN. Today. A deputation from the Otago Hospital Board placed before the Prime Minister the question of what should he done regarding a sum of £3.600 raised in Invercargill some years ago for the purchase of radium. Si.r Louis Barnett stated the money was raised in answer to an appeal from Dunedin for the purpose of supplying the Dunedin base hospital with radium, it being understood that Southland people would be treated on the same basis as those from Dunedin, and that emanation outfits could be sent to Invercargill if patients could not come to Dunedin. The Invercargill people later said the money should be used as a fund for the expenses of people coming to Dunedin for treatment. Very few people had come up and the trustees themselves were dissatisfied with the way the money was being expended. The fund had grown to £ 4,400, and the trustees were prepared to hand it over on the condition that the radium purchased should be handed back to Invercargill at any future time if required there. Sir Joseph stated that he would confer with the Invercargill Hospital Board. He had no doubt that he would be able to give effect to the deputation’s request for permission to purchase radium.
