COMMONWEALTH PURO+ASfcfc LETTERS OF BANKS VALUABLE COLLECTION (Australian and N.Z. Press Association}. Reed. 9.5 a.m. LONDON, Monday. On behalf of the Commonwealth, the Mitchell Library (Sydney) bought 4or £7,600 all the letters of Sir Joseph Banks, Captain Cook’s botanist, •x----cepl the first lot, a letter written at Rio de Janeiro, which Quaritchs. the dealers, bought, for £420.
Sir Joseph Banks was born in 1743. and was educated at Harrow. Eton, and Oxford. At the age of 23 he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society, and in the same year started with Lieutenant Phipps on a botanical exploration of Newfoundland. In 176* he accompanied Captain Cook hi* voyage round the world, and mad** many notable botanical discoveries and a large collection of specimens. In 1772 lie visited Iceland. He was. in effect, the botanical director of K?w Gardens, though he held no such appointment. He was elected president of the Royal Society in 1778, and hold that office until his death in 1820. Banks Peninsula, in New Zealand, was named after him by Captain Cook.
