PROMINENT IN BUSINESS
MR. GEORGE ASHLEY , managing director of Ashley's A.B.C. Stores, is a well-known figure in Auckland business circles.
"Don’t, be a waster of time," says a motto hanging on Mr. Ashley's office wall. Mr. Ashley never has. He started with Messrs. Court Bros., then proprietors of the big "Court" establishment, as a lad oj Id. and. worked his nay up to the top. He was manager of Messrs. John Court. Ltd., for JO years, leaving the firm after 2S years' service to start on his own account in Karangahape Road in 1019. Apart from business, Mr. Ashley is prominent in local body politics. He is a member of the Auckland City Council and the Auckland Transport Board. He is a past president of the Auckland Drapers' and- Boot Retailers' Association, and a present executive member. In his younger days Mr. Ashley was a keen footballer and rifle shot. He is a- member of the Akarana Rifle Club and within the last month, put up an outstanding performance at longrange shooting.
