LUKE’S GREAT WIN VARSITY DEFEATS SHORE By adopting a policy of rush and bustle, St. Luke’s forwards took charge of the match with Somervill on Saturday, and after a rousing exhibition of first-rate hockey lowered their rivals’ colours by 4—2. ALTHOUGH -Vo. 2 ground was i bumpy and had been well watered | by overnight rain, play was dashing and eventlul from the first bully until the linal whistle. At half-time scores were 2-a.il, and although the Whites fought desperately they could not keep St. Luke's at bay. The only other senior fixture teas the meeting of .North Shore and \ arslty, which resulted in a win for the ( students by tile odd goal in five after ; a strenuous hut ragged encounter. Women's matches were continued in all grades. ST. LUKE'S DESERVES WIN St. Luke’s triumph over Somerville 1 was brought about chiefly on account of the Reds' ability to maintain an incessant hammering by the forward line and Somerville’s failure in the * fullback division. From the -word go ; fc:t. Luke's decided on a policy, main- i tained it, and slogged their way through the White defence time and I again. There was no doubt Somerville's two backs were not up to the. standard set by that team in former. years, and a lack of unity was all too ! apparent, Most of the shock of an ; exultant forward squad fell, therefore, i upon the halves, who resijonded well i on the whole. All five of the Red van- ! guard tossed the ball about like in- j sDired men. Bay, inside left, was per- j haps the most spectacular. He led ; many superb movements. Both the i Giles’s were on top of form, and j "Hori” Hookham staged a pleasing i ! come-back. Wotherspoon. inside right, I ! was not ciuite up to the quality of his . i colleagues, and his off-side goal should i have been better watched. All three 1 halves, W. Wiliams, Robertson and j Clark were sound. The last-named showed to advantage in stopping and 1 merits his elevation from second grade. ; The star of the defence was unquesi tionably H. Williams, left fullback. For : coolness, safe stopping and clean hitI ting, he was in a class of his own on the day’s work. His associate. Bur--1 nett, was less in the limelight, not havj ing got properly into form. High field brought off some sensational kicking saves and bids fair to reach the from rank of goalies. Somerville, while not deserving a win or even a draw, was unlucky in not picking up one other goal. Also, the penalty bully from which Luke's opened their account should not have happened. The fullbacks were thoroughly hustled, and this bred rashness. The front line demonstrated plenty of dash but the work was too individual- • istic and out-of-position play was | noticeable. Still. Lukes by no means I had things their own way, and the ! match was after the style of some of > the brilliant battles between the clubs 1 seen in other days. The clash of red and white will b looked forward to j with relish, and Somerville is ii ‘ jt

likely to let a defeat happen again. Whatever results, may it be ensured that the fine sporting spirit which characterised Saturday’s match will predominate in every meeting of SW Luke’s and Somerville. UNIVERSITY v. NORTH SHORE The match played on Saturday* afternoon was disappointing. Neither team played as well as it had done on the previous Saturday, and although both sides fought hard there was little or no brilliant hockey. The game began with University attacking in the Shore twenty-five and right throughout it consisted of a series of University attacks followed by Shore counter-attacks. University's forward line was not working well and there was continual trouble, thanks to the fact that, instead of the line attacking level, it attacked in the form of an arrow-head, one man being at the apex with the ball and the rest hanging too far back, to give him any material assistance. Consequently, although the University men were very near to scoring several times their attacks were not pressed home efficiently. With the Shore team the business was practically reversed. The backs worked well simply as a defensive body, but they had difficulty in getting the ball away to the forwards. When the forwards did get away properly they came down the field in great style and time and again only some very clever defensive play saved the University goal from these lightning attacks. Reid played his usual excellent game for Shore, though he did not have sufficient opportunity to display his talents. For University, Meiklejohn. at the apex of the attacking line, played a fine, useful game in a builocking kind of style. As a matter of fact, none of the players in either of the teams actually played badly, but for some reason, perhaps because of the sogginess of the ground, there was no polish about the play and a great lack of co-ordination on both sides. WAIPA LADIES’ ASSOCIATION At the annual meeting of the \Vaip4, i Radies’ Hockey Association on Thursj day. advice was received from the ! Auckland Ladies' Association that | affiliation had been granted. The following officers were elected: Patron, Mr. W. J. Broadfoot, AI.P ; j president, Air. E. J. Spiers; vice-presi-dents, Alessrs.
