MR. MORTON TO RESIGN
CANNOT REMAIN ON TRANSPORT BOARD “ONLY HONOURABLE COURSE” Mr. F. S. Morton, a member of thw- Auckland Transport Board, has intimated his intention to resign his seat. He gave notice of his intention in a letter to the Onehunga Borough Council. his resignation, Mr. Morton states: “As you are aware, some two months ago I suffered a breakdown in health and, acting on medical advice, I was reluctantly compelled to refrain from acceding to the many requests to offer myself for re-election to your council. I consider the only honourable course for a member of the Transport Board to pursue, whether he be defeated at the polls or fails to submit himself for re-election, is to resign his seat and allow someone else to fill the position legitimately. I could not remain on the board and conscientiously submit to a policy which I have strenuously opposed and one which, although endorsed by the ratepayers, will, in my opinion, be regretted in the future.” Mr. Morton is withholding his resignation from the secretary of the Transport Board until arrangements have been made to elect a new representative. The Onehunga Borough Council will probably arrange with Mr. S. Gray, town clerk at Mount Eden, who acted as secretary for the local bodies, to call for nominations from the bodies represented by Mr. Morton. These are Onehunga, Mt. Wellington, Mt. Roskill, One Tree Hill, Elierslie and Panmure.
