Joan Bennett, Richard Bennett’s daughter, has been signed to a threeyear contract by United Artists. Mary denies persistent rumours of an engagement, circulated as a result of their appearance together at numerous Hollywood parties. Evelyn Brent and William Powell will have the leading roles in the Paramount picture, “Darkened Rooms,” based on the well-known story by Sir Philip Gibbs. It is to be made in all-talking version, and also as a silent picture. Lothar Mendes will direct. A 13-year-old boy who won the junior championship in a model airplane meet in Los Angeles participated in by 1,000 youths, also won a part in pictures. He is John Berg, who admits his hero is Colonel Lindbergh, and who is thrilled at a chance to act on the screen. E. A. Dupont, producer of “Moulin Rouge” and “Piccadilly” for British International Pictures, will shortly be commencing his third picture for 8.1., featuring Sid Chaplin. Chaplin’s special cameraman. Kosher, who w-as responsible for such magnificent work in "Sunrise,” will be in charge of the cameras. The smallest high school class in history is conducted at the M-G-M studios by Mrs. K. A. Newell, registered teacher in charge of the school for minor players. It was instituted solely for Ted Smollen, a little over 2ft tali, although he’s 17 years old. Under the California law minors must attend school, hence Ted studies Algebra and English between scenes.
