AUSTRALIA GOES TO THE MOVIES
An American daily claims that, next to the United States, Australia contains the largest proportionate film-going population of any country. It puts the information this way: “Two million two hundred and fifty thousand picture enthusiasts weekly visit the ‘cinemas,” as Australians call the palaces of the silver sheet, which is more than one-third the total population of the Com monwealth. “In point of revenue obtained, Australia is the second best market for American films. The United Kingdom takes first place. Eighty per cent, of the pictures brought into the country in 1927 were of American origin. Of the feature films 90 per cent, were from the United States. “Australia has 1,200 picture theatres with a seating capacity of 937,000 and representing an investment of over £30,000,000.
