Scurrilous Letters Annoy Friends of Rancher Earl
SCOTLAND YARD has been asked by Mr. Trimmer, secretary to the rancher Earl of Egmont (who recently went to England from Canada to claim his title), to investigate scurrilous letters which have been addressed to him and his wife.
Mr. and Mrs. Trimmer have been the constant companions of Lord Egmont and Viscount Perceval, his son, since they left their ranch at Preddis, Alberta, to take over the family estates of the Egmonts. It was Mr. Trimmer who, as postmaster, received the first news of the rancher’s accession to an English peerage. He has now forwarded to the Yard a letter sent to Mrs. Trimmer ■which bears the Richmond, London, postmark, and begins, “Mrs. Trimmer, Marm.,” but has no signature. “If Scotland Yards thinks it will be able to discover the writer I am quite willing that the letter should be published in facsimile,” he told a “Daily Chronicle” man. I shall leave no stone unturned until I have discovered the originator of the letter, which has caused my wife much unhappiness.” “Seeking Personal Profit” In substance this letter accuses both Mr. and Mrs. Trimmer of forcing their attentions upon the Earl, and seeking personal profit from the rancher’s elevation to the peerage. Other insinuations of a more serious nature are made. It was Lord Egmont who first mentioned the matter, and he explained that it -was a direct result of certain newspapers stressing his former status in all they published about him.
“Mr. and Mrs. Trimmer are now suffering because of that,” he said. B is a shame, and Mrs. Trimmer has been crying over this last letter. Lord Egmont said that Mr. Trimmer had to be persuaded to come to England with him. . “I have done a lot oi business with
Trimmer,” he added, “and I k noW is a white man. That is why I him with me. I wanted a friend home I could trust.” Mr. Trimmer, who served tinction as an officer in the Cana Army throughout the w ar. say s £ g n id the persuasion of Lord Egmont “ e . his business to lire in England him.
