Royal Doulton’s Cup
FRANKLIN RACES DEAD HEAT IN HACK EVENT THE extra permit given the Franklin Racing Club was made use of today at Pukekohe where an interesting programme was staged. Fine weather prevailed and there was a good attendance. After the over-night rain the track was inclined to be heavy. Well supported candidates were successful in the divisions of the opening event. In a great finish Kawainga and Catapult finished on terms for first place, the latter returning a double-figure price. Royal Doulton won the Cup in brilliant fashion from the favourite, High Pitch, and was also at a good figure. Results;—

Backers were well on the mark in the Trial Handicap, which was run in two divisions, the favourite, Cruachan £266, and third choice, Diamond Queen £167, being the ultimate winners. The Rose Willonyx—Seaday bracket was second in order of favouritism with £175. Parfait Amour was first to show out in the initial heat, followed by Theodolite, Little Gift, Seaday, Cruachan and Kingsland, this lot being well bunched. Crossing the top the field began to string out, and Parfait Amour on the rails, and Seaday were first to turn for home, closely attended by the favourite, Catonian, Theodolite and Grand Arch. In the run home the leader weakened and Cruachan finishing I won by two lengths from Cutoninn, with Parfait Amour a neck away third. Then came Seaday, Grand Arch, Little Gift and Theodolite. Otranto led out from Land Measure, Diamond Queen, Princess Rain, Ruby Dawn, and Pai Ana, but, with two furlongs covered, Princess Rain was ■the pacemaker, her closest attendants being Ruby Dawn, Otranto, Land Measure, Diamond Queen, and Pai Ana. There was little change till the straight was reached, where Diamond Queen showed up beside Pi’incess Rain and Ruby Dawn, and, going on, beat Ruby Dawn by less than a length, with Loving Cup, who finished fast, a length away third. HLigli-weight Handicap, with War Officer, £3lB, next choice, but Bizarro (£265) and Harbour View (£232) had fair support. When the field settled down. Welcome Home, on the outside, was showing in front passing the stand from Abbott’s Delight, Lucess, Clockwork, Young Thurnham, Bizarro, War Officer, and Always. Lucess was in the van along the back, being attended by Welcome Home, Abbott’s Delight, Bizarro, Clockwork, Young Thurnham, and Harbour View. The latter took charge crossing the top. and led into the straight from Welcome Home, Bizarro, and Kawini,
who had also moved forward at the top. In the race to the judge, Bizarro threw out a strong challenge to Harbour View, and wore him down to get a head victory, with Kawini threeparts of a length away in .third* place. War Officer was fourth, and then followed Merry Mason, AVelcome Home, Pouri, Brampton, Glendowie, and Lucess. Rider Suspended D. R. Gunn, rider of Welcome Home in tho Ram ar am a. There was good money for Standfast £SOB in the Pukekawa Hack, with Valuation and Leitrim evenly backed next in order with £438. The result was a dead-beat between Kawainga £lB3 and Catapult £143, the latter paying double figures. Mark Mint, who drew the ace, was the smartest to begin and led along the back from Catapult and Standfast, the trio being just clear of Valuation, Unoeo, Roman Pearl and Crown Arch. Mark Mint. Catapult, Roman Pearl and Valuation were most prominent crossing the top, but Catapult was first round the corner, followed by Mark Mint, Valuation, Roman Pearl, Kawainga and Standfast. A good race ensued to the post, "the judge being unable to separate Catapult and Kawainga, . with Standfast two and a-half lengths away, third. There was a good pool in the chief event, Massey Memorial, High Pitch being a firm favourite with £703, but a second dividend was the best he could return his supporters. Mervette £582, Lucy Rose £489 and The Lover £402 were the best supported of the remainder, the eventual winner. Royal Doulton. being at a liberal price. Te Money was the early leader, and going out of the straight was attended by Modest Boy, King Emerald, The Lover, Thursby, Royal Doulton, with the favourite at the tail of the field. Along the back Modest Boy and King Emerald were on terms with Te Money, closely followed by Thursby, The Lover, Royal Doulton and Lucy Rose. Thursby went to the front crossing the top, where the field bunched, and Lucy Rose came down at the four-fur-long post. Thursby was first into the straight from King Emerald and High Pitch, who had made up ground fast. Royal Doulton, The Lover, In the Shade, Modest Boy and Mervette. One hundred yards from the post Thursby looked a winner, but High Pitch and Royal Doulton collared Mm. and in a good finish the Pukekohe-trained mare won handsomely by over a. length, the favourite beating Thursby by half a length for second place. King Emerald was fourth, followed by The Lover, Modest Boy and Mervette.
