Junior Rugby Notes

RECRUITING ranks of future senior players, junior grade Rugby is booming throughout Auckland, and if the standard indicated in the opening games on Saturday is maintained and improved, followers should witness some higli-class and spectacular games during the season. Nineteen teams are participating in this season’s competitions, the same as last year. A notable absentee from this year's matches is Parnell which, strengthened considerably in the forward division, has advanced to senior B grade, accompanied by Kingsland, which has jumped from intermediate to the same grade. This team likewise has been greatly improved during the off season. Varsity, last year’s champion, which is this year without the services of McKay, who has been promoted to senior, has started well, though College Rifles ran it surprisingly close in the opening match. The University men, however, are expected to settle down better after a month’s hard training. Grammar Old Boys have suffered considerably as a result of advancement of several of their best backs' and forwards to senior rank, including Bell, last year’s captain, Batty, Corner, Menzies, Potter and Young. The team, however, has recruited a number of promising lads from last year’s school fifteen, and these, with the old hands, should form the nucleus of a strong combination later in the season. Ponsonby is practically as strong as ever, and judging by the score it ran up against Marathon in the opening game, should be well in the running for the finalists.

It is very gratifying to find that Parnell juniors of last year and Kingsland, last season’s intermediates, have been greeted with success in their debut in senior B grade games on Saturday. The Sun intends that this column shall be devoted weekly to criticisms of players and topics of the game in the junior grade, with the object of fostering the sport. Contributions from club secretaries and coaches will be appreciated.
