CAUGHT RED-HANDED

SWEEPSTAKE ORGANISER FINED £2 OPERATED ON COURSE Singled out from a stand at Ellerslie by Chief-Detective Hammond, Frank Stanley was accosted at a recent race-meeting while in the act of organising a sweepstake. gTANLEY was accordingly charged at the Police Court this morning and pleaded guilty by letter. He explained that he was unable to attend the court as he had just obtained a position and did not wish to take any risk of losing it. “I ask f r the mercy of the court for my crime,” his letter stated. “There are extenuating circumstances, as I have been out of work, and was trying to get a few shillings to pay my debts. I tfiave a wife and three children.”

In the opinion of the chief-detective, Stanley had appeared more as if he were tote betting, although it was impossible to prove it. He had £5 19s in silver in his possession, and books found on him showed that he was making up sweepstakes. “I saw him from the stand, and thought he was up to something, so I sent a couple of men after him,” coa- | tinued Mr. Hammond. “Stanley stops a portion of the money for his com- ■ mission, he does not get up the I sweeps for love.” It was Stanley s i first appearance. A fine of £2 was imposed.
