Forbury Trots
TERENCE DILLON SCORES Dead-Heat in Trotting Stakes (Special to THE SUN) DUNEDIN, Thursday. rE Forbury Park Trotting: Club’s winter meeting opened in fine but cold weather. The track, after rain overnight, was heavy and times were slow. Rain set in late in the afternoon, but an increase was recorded in the totalisator, the figures for the day being £21,950 ag'ainst £21,211 for the corresponding day last May.
A feature of the racing, which was of a high order, was the failure of fayourites, not one first choice securing a winning certificate, Ardgour second in the Domain Handicap, being the only one to return a dividend. Terence Dillon, who showed a fine return to his best form, won the chief j event comfortably from a good field, paying a remunerative price. The Sires Produce Stakes saw a desperate finish between the ex-Aucklander Great Way and Great Nelson, the judge being unable to separate them at the finish. Bracket Successful Admiral Bingen (F. G. Holmes) was made a very hot favourite in the Bayfield Handicap, carrying nearly four times the amount invested on the bracket, Kitty Patch and Silurian. After a very uninteresting race, in which Kitty Patch opened up a 20 lengths break in the early stages, D. Bennett brought along the other side of the bracket, Silurian, to beat her by two lengths. W. Taylor, rider of Kitty Patch, took no pains to dispute i Silurian’s challenge in the straight, and was severely cautioned for not riding his mount out for first place. Admiral Bingen went away slowly as usual, and he never looked like a winner. Kereta, who was a poor third, was not at home in the going, a fact that played havoc with several other runners. Wee Patch, who finished fourth, ought to be worthy of more respect on Saturday. Easy for Nell De Beau Nell De Beau showed marked improvement on Amberley form, by winning the Domain Handicap with the greatest of ease by two lengths from the favourite, Ardgour, who led until 20yds off the post. Willie Wilkes was flogged unmercifully half a mile from home, but after looking like a winner inside the distance, faded out to third place. He is a very unwilling customer at the best of times, but the pressure in this case was severe. After the placed horses came Tahoe, Erin’s Fortune and Jessie Huon. The winner is owned by Mr. Geo. McMillan, of Auckland, who had a later success with Dundas Boy. Southland's Strong Hand In a field of 17, Wilma Dillon, the back-marker, was made a warm fayourite for the Beach Saddle Handicap, but although he went a fine race, had to lower sail to two other Southland - ers in Sunchild and Slump, the former coming with a rattle to beat Slump by a length, with Wilma Dillon two lengths away. Sunchild is purported to be a rare speed artist in training, and quite one of the most promising pacers over all distances hailing from Southland. The same applies to Wilma Dillon, while Slump is a wellknown character all down the line. Nelson Fay showed a lot of speed, and he may do better on Saturday. Terence Dillon Too Good Silk Thread was a much better favourite than Free Advice and Harvest Child for the Prince of Wales Handicap. The favourite always held a good position, but lack of stamina saw Silk Thread beaten into fifth position. Jean McElwyn led out f rom Epigram, AthaV one and Harvest Child at the start, but with two furlongs to go, Terence Dillon asserted himself and went past Silk Thread, Jean McElwyn and Free Advice in his old effortless style. Once into the straight, Terence Dillon looked to have an easy thing on, but halfway up the running J. McClennan had to keep him jigging, to stall off a determined challenge from Jean McElwyn. Logan Chief battled on to beat Athal-
one for third money, with Silk Thread fifth. Several of the runners were all at sea in the going, including Daphne De Oro and Author Jinks. Mate o Mine gave a certain amount of cheek for a time, and is likely to improve. Jean McElwyn, on to-day’s performance, will keep the others scratching to beat her on Saturday. Good Price For Western Voyage Bingen Starr was all the rage for th© St. Clair Handicap, but be trotted badlv, breaking several times during the funning. Others that went poorly, Swiftbine and Sarsaparilla, Blue Thorpe and Dolores put in breaks at critical stages. At the three furlong disc Audobell was in command from Western Voyage, who was going very fast, and Trampfast was travelling like a champion in third place. Audobell was done with a furlong from home, and in a. wonderful finish Western Voyage lasted it out to vin b> half a * head from Trampfast, with Audobell four lengths away. Then came Bonnie Belmont and Le rodu. Bonnie Belmont unwound terrific pace in the seraight. and should be very prominent if raced on Saturday. Kennerley Springs Surprise Vendome, a recent Australian importation. hailing from J. J. Kennerley’s stable, came with a sustained run to touch off Morning Star by a vert narrow margin on" the post m the Renown Handicap. Logan Hanlon went a good race to collect third money, but the form displayed by the favourite bracket. Royal Comrade and Rrelsler, was disappointing. The three-year-old Dilworth was looking forward half a mile from home, and in a smaller field on Saturday will be worthy of notice. Vendome was produced in tiptop order and looked ready to do it all over again when returned to scale. Morning Bun is a bold, free goer, ranking as a half-brother to Bell Harold. He is by Sungod—Jenny Bell, and is owned by Mr. J. Hunter, of Wyndham. The start, considering the size of the field, was quite satisfactory. Dundas Boy’s Fine Effort Dundis Boy, »;as one iqs. many tar.
the opposition in the Flying Handicap, in which Athalone was a hot favourite. R. B. Berry took some time to get Dundas Boy on the go, and Firpo stayed altogether. Trimmer trimmed up th© opposition in rare style, until Dundas Boy got near him, and then he succumbed by three lengths at the finish. Evelyn Locanda was two lengths* away in third place, and the next to finish was Athalone, who put in a bad break four furlongs from borne. Of the others old Downcast made the most promising showing.
