Roman Abbey Shows Them How
HIPO FOLLOWS SUIT GLENGARIFF BEATS MISTER GAMP (Special to THE SUN) HAWERA, Thursday. The Egmont Racing Club’s winter meeting was opened to-day before a good attendance in showery weather. The totalisator handled £27,947 10s, a decrease of £407 10s compared with the first day last year. The Telegraph Hack Handicap was run in two divisions, each being treated, as a separate race. The Hack Steeplechase was marred by a number of mishaps, only six of the 14 starters completing the journey. Falls or retirement accounted for the remainder, but no serious injuries were received. Telegraph Hack Richfield and Cool Mint were well backed for the first division of the Telegraph Handicap. Hop wood missed the jump -out, and when tlie field had l ' ~I THE acceptances for the | second day of the Eg--1 mont meeting, to-morrow at | Hawera, together with a brief | review of the prospects, will be found on the late news j page of this issue. settled down Denier was in front from Richfield, Golden Flower and Cool Mint. This was the order to the straight, where Denier and Richfield fought out a good finish, Denier, well ridden, winning by a neck. Golden Flower was a length and a-half away third, and Joke Form fourth. Tongahoe Hurdles Ripon Abbey went out very fast in the Tongahoe Hurdles, and led the way to the straight lor the first time, with a break of several lengths on the field. Running past the stands Ripon Abbey still had charge, but was not jumping well. Gala Day, Polyphemus, Horomea, Red Fuchsia and Glengariff were next to the leader. Along the back Red Fuchsia ran up into third place, and then Mister Gamp ran past the field and took charge, while Glengariff also improved his position. Mister Gamp and Glengariff led Red Fuchsia into the straight and, in a good finish, Glengariff won by a head from Mister Gamp, with Red Fuchsia a length away third and Polyphemus, Horomea and Ripon Abbey following. Telegraph Hack Airway headed a good pool on the second division of the Telegraph Handicap. Havering began smartly and was always well placed. Animated led to three furlongs from home from Havering, Monsogne and Good Cheer. Havering took charge at the entrance to the straight, and, although Monsogne came at him, he won by half a neck, with Second Thought finishing fast in third place. Another half a neck away came Good Cheer, fourth, then Bione and St. Melba. Hack Steeplechase The Hack Steeplechase was a real chapter of acicdents. Mandarine went down at the first fence and caused a mix-up, TJrall and Royal Elm losing their riders and Trouble stopping at the fence. Passing through the straight Maidos was well clear of Kapuna, Highwayman and Mountain Crag, and the field was lengthily strung out. Kapuna and Maidos were together along the back and Highwayman was gaining on them, but Mountain Crag was jumping badly and eventually fell. Highwayman, Maidos and Kapuna were together two fences from home, but in the run home Highwayman won by two lengths from Kapuna. with Maidos four lengths away third, and Huirangi Girl, Pikimai and Chyrria the only others to finish. Alaric ran off and Son o’ Mine lost his rider. Egmont Steeplechase Roman Abbey and Puwhero carried the money in the Egmont Steeplechase. Roman Abbey went to the front at the start and, giving a fine exhibition of fencing, stayed there to the end. Puwhero and Brigadier Bill challenged at varipttg stages of the race, but Roman Abbey drew out again over the last* half-mile and eventually won by two lengths from Brigadier Bill, with Gilgai a poor third and Puwhe.ro fourth. Roman Abbey’s rider lost an iron at the last fence and for a while it seemed that Brigadier Bill might beat him. but a recovery was made in time. Flying Handicap Broad Acre led out in the Flying
Handicap, while Keddar. Lady Quex and Booster were well forward. On nearing the straight Bonogne made up a deal of but_ he had to go round the field Keddar took charge in the straight and came on to win by two lengths from Lady Quex, who finished well but wide out and beat Broad Acre by a neck for second place. Booster was a fair fourth, with Valkon. Epistle, Atholspear and Bonogne well up behind the placed horses. Mcßae Memorial Blimp wound up a good favourite for the Mcßae Handicap, with the eventual winner, Hipo, at double figures. Day Guard led through the straight with Hipo, while Teri, Bisox, Manly, Goodwill and Blimp were next. Hipo was a shade in front of Day Guard along the back and be led into the straight from a bunched field. Tawhiti Hack There was good money for half the field in the concluding race. Skyrider, Kawliakina, Calamine and Royal Acre all being heavily backed. Clover Leaf made play along the back and turned for home ahead of Calamine, Kawliakina, Royal Acre and Fortalice.
