ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY The sum of £24 has been set aside by the Auckland Astronomical Society to form the nucleus of a fund for the construction of a new observatory in Auckland, according to a report presented to the annual meeting last night. The society had 50 members, the same as last year. Appreciative reference was made to the value of the monthly list of coming astronomical events prepared by Mr. J. P. Artha. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as under: Patron, the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon; president, Professor P. \V. Burbridge: vice-president, Mr. A. G. Lunn; secretary, Mr. E. G. Jones; committee, Messrs. J. P. Artha, X. H. Good, G. Knight and P. Chambers. The meeting concluded with an interesting address illustrated by lantern slides on the sun by Mr. Jones
