STUBBORN SQUATTER
MAORI REFUSES TO LEAVE PRIVATE LAND PREFERS GOING TO GAOL The extraordinary attitude of Nikau Putere, a middle-aged Maori, who has persisted in squatting on the land of Mr. H. Hutt, at Ngaruawahia, resulted in his appearance at the Magistrate’s Court this morning. Putere, with his son-in-law, has been on Mr. Hutt’s land for some time, and his resisted all efforts to have him removed. The appearance of a number of uniformed police from Hamilton failed to move him, and, as a last resource, he had to be brought before the court, where he was charged with trespass. There he was told that the conviction, would not be pressed if he would agree to leave the land. He still maintained his stubborn attitude and was fined £lO, in default three months’ imprisonment. Before leaving the dock Putere expressed his determination to go to gaol. He would “take the fine out,” ”« asserted.
