PENROSE LEVEL-CROSSING

SAFETY DEVICE SOUGHT MR. JORDAN’S EFFORTS Persistent endeavours to have the Church Street level crossing at Penrose attended to and made safe are being made by Mr. W. J. Jordan, M.P. for Manukau, who is in further communictaion with the Minister of Railways. Mr. Jordan, who has been in frequent communication with the Minister during the past three years in connection with this crossing, yesterday received the following reply to a recent letter: “YV7E have included Church Street ’ f crossing in our list of crossings at which we propose to instal warning devices. It is our practice to carry out the work strictly in order of urgency as funds become available, and as there is still a number of crossings at -which the need for protection is considered more urgent than at Church Street, I regret it is not possible to complete the latter crossing at the present time." Mr. Jordan has now forwarded the following telegram to the Minister: "Letter received regarding dangerous crossing at. Church Street, Penrose. Regret that you treat matter intly. At inquest yesterday on Mr. Atkinson, recently killed there, coroner said the crossing was dangerous one. He asked that matter be attended to as urgent and satisfactory signal erected without delay.”
