ATTACK ON GIRL
ASSAULT AT HERNE BAY YOUNG MAN CONVICTED Allegations of brutal criminal assault on a girl, aged 17, were made at the Supreme Court yesterday, when Roy Gordon Capel, a young man, stood trial on a charge of rape at Herne Bay on January 27. Mr. V. N. Hubble, who prosecuted, said the girl had been reading a book on a bank above the beach when accused and two companions came by. Accused sat beside her. and, without warning, committed the crime for which he was charged. A little later one of his companions was alleged to have committed a similar offence, for which he would also bo standing trial. Medical evidence was given by a pathologist, and two other doctors supported the Crown's statement that the girl had been the victim of a criminal assault.
The jury, after a retirement of four hours, returned a verdict of guilty on the alternative charge of assault with intent to commit rape. Sentence was deferred until Saturday morning.
